It's amazing how no matter how long you have been away, when you return the city fits like a glove. I knew I would miss the diversity, the wealth of ethnic grocery stores, the familiarity and my family, of course. What I didn't expect though was missing the daredevil drivers swooping the gutter lane, people selling their wares on busy street corners and loads of pigeons. Even places like USC, a school I'm sworn to despise thanks to my beloved UCLA degree, has gained a fondness in my heart.
Keith is happy as a little clam out here, even regaining his slick city driving skills back no problem. I am diligently working on satisfying my Mexican food jones, having already hit Rodeo Mexican Grill twice, found some amazing pan dulce and bought spices to bring home.

Before we left California, HGTV did a program about tacky Christmas Lights. They showed beautiful home grown light shows that would make the Rockefeller Center look like amateur hour. Originally started by my sister in San Francisco, one of our favorite holiday games back in Cali was to honor one holiday light disaster with the utmost accolade of the "It's Christmas Dammit" award. It looked like HGTV had quite a few contenders on that show. We simply had to take a look.
Turns out most of the lights they were highlighting were in Richmond, Virginia, of all places. This year Keith and I made a special trip out to go check out the hub-bub for ourselves. What an interesting experience that was.
